Parenthood's Secret Blessings

I have mentioned that I have a child before on this blog.  Those of us who are parents in this world in any hands on capacity would probably agree with me that there are a lot of things that happen that you aren't warned about.  On the other end of that though there are some great advantages that you aren't told about either.
A great blessing of being a parent is that it causes me to purposefully break down my life philosophies into the simplest form.  My son looks to me to get  his first understanding of the world, and I need to be able to share that with him.  I order to be an effective communicator I have to be able to talk on his level.  This is a great way to think about evangelism too.  If you can tell a child about Jesus in a way that they understand then you can talk to adults and they will most likely understand. I heard several people state that you haven't learned something well enough until you can teach it to someone else.
One of the greatest blessing for me as a parent is when I see myself as my son.  Sometimes I will talk to him about important life lessons like trust, honesty, patience, forgiveness, or obedience, and I  pause after a statement because it feels like God is speaking to me about the same things. Having children helps me to understand God's role in my life as a parent, and often times my issues are the same as my son's on a more undercurrent level.  Seeing my son helps me to see myself and to understand God's loving correction of me.

"For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth"  Proverbs 3:12

It is a huge responsibility for us parents of faith to find a way to instruct our children in the Lord.  Here are some great materials on how to do that
