God's Measuring Scale
The Lord is a magnifacent creator. He's made masterpieces from nothing. Every delicious flavor; every beautiful arrangement of nature; even the plush clothing of the animals was created by God's careful words and stroke of genius. I think of cooking in this way too. I love to bake and cook. I feel like an artist skillfully scheming to turn a group of items into a masterpiece. If I give the right measurements in the right combinations of foods then I can produce great food to my delight. What really amazes me is how a simple change in calculation can turn a cake into a biscuit or a pancake or a pie crust. That is the power of the measuring spoon and cup. One thing about cooking is that you can't get the results without pouring out the ingredients. I see my life in this way, a group of ingredients to be poured out for the creation of something wonderful in the hands of the master creator.
The wonderful thing about being a vessel for God's creative work is that once we are empty God fills us again with more or maybe even something new. It can feel really hollow when I have done a lot in the name of the Lord, but I find that in that seemingly empty place God pours back into me so that I am full again. I say seemingly empty because when I pour myself out for the Lord, just as when pouring out a pastry batter, there is always something left for me. I do ministry quite a bit and the other day I almost had a blow up. It was at that point where I realized that I was running on empty. I had replaced God's devine ingredients with my own effort. There was nothing left in me but crumbs of what had been a spirit filled with gratefulness just to be able to minister. Something had gone wrong in my recipe because I forgot to get the ingredients I needed of from the Lord. I needed to be washed out andstart again. Thank God that as soon as I realized what was going on that I had a talk with the Lord and he restored me. I am speaking of the importance of reading my Bible and spending time under God's voice. I was reading my Bible, but I had missed some church services "doing ministry." There are only two responsibilities of the minister of God and that is to get filled and pour out. I had forgotten to get filled and tried to pour. It is not in God's plan to leave us empty and used up. God has always measured my portion back to me and more when I sat at his well. It is an act of faith to pour yourself out for anyone or anything, but I know that God wouldn't ask my to pour out any more than was necessary. God's measurements are always perfect. The best thing that any of us can do is to hold nothing back from God, whether it is our fullness that we are trying to hold on to or our emptiness that we are trying to hide. There is nothing hidden from the face of God. He knows where everything that we have belongs, and God's covenant scale leans heavily in our favor. People of God step up to the scale. God will fill you up to overflowing and when he does it is critical that we pour out whereever we are assigned, knowing that our loving God has a portion just for us and promises to refill us.
Matthew 7:2 King James Bible
For with what judgment ye judge , ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete , it shall be measured to you again.
Luke 6:38 King James Bible
Give , and it shall be given unto you; good measure , pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom . For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again
Psalms 34:8
O taste and see that the LORD [is] good: blessed [is] the man [that] trusteth in him.
