Do You Know Your Value?

I was asking God the other morning how I can improve my service to him and other people, and I heard clearly that in order to effectively serve I have to know my value.  This is to know where my strengths and gifting lie and how they apply in differing situations.  None of us can give what we don't have, and some of us could be standing in the way of someone else's serve by trying to fit into a position that isn't our assignment.  I am one of those "jack of all trades" types of people, but there are very few if any situations that require all of my skills. In my enthusiasm I have burned myself out more than a few times so believe me when I say that misplaced skills are at best a waste of energy. Find where you can do the most good and station yourself there.  A skills test or personality assessment works great for this.  Check out this link to see how your skills are matching what you're doing.Click Here! I assure you that someone else will take up the mantle of those other areas. The kingdom of God is a community work.

I have a friend who told me once that God gives us the energy, time, and ability to do everything that he has given us to do, but when we start to add to that we become exhausted and our quality of service begins to suffer.  He was so right. This speaks to knowing your value in the way of knowing that you need to preserve yourself.  I know that the life of an Apostle of Christ is a life of pouring yourself out, but if you are pouring out more than you are being filled up then you are a dry well.

There is a story of two women Mary and Martha in the Bible.  Martha was the worker bee and Mary was the one who stationed herself by her Lord to glean from his wisdom.  While Martha was upset, this is what Jesus had to say about it "Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her." Luke 10:38-42 NIV
This speaks to knowing where our value comes from.  Every good and perfect gift comes from the Lord (paraphrase of James 1:17).  We are not the owners of our gifts and calling, we are the stewards.   Every Christian needs to sit at the feet of the Lord. If we spend the apropriate quality (and yes I meant quaLity) of time under the instruction and restoration of the Lord, we will know what we are being filled for. We'll know our assignment and our value.

So back to today's question, do you know your value?
