The King's Highway

I was reminded this morning in my devotion that God wants me to enjoy the best life.  It is funny because I had to explain this to one of my sons yesterday.  He was angry because my husband and I were getting on his case about not listening to instructions before running off to do what "he thought we wanted".  Really, he was just running off to do what he was willing to do rather than what we asked him to do.  This resulted in us giving him unwanted redirection.  We made him start over and do things the way that we told him to originally.  This was a time sensitive instruction because we had a family event to go to.  He was holding us up with his disobedience and lack of cooperation. He bulked and got angry when he realized that we would not be going until he complied.  He cried and insisted that he wanted to go. He thought that he was fast tracking the process by doing things his way when really he was slowing everything down.  He was on the verge of missing out on something really wonderful because he  thought he knew a better way than what Mom and Dad were telling him.  Does that sound familiar?  Many times we think that God's ways are slowing us down, but in reality his ways are higher than our ways and his thoughts are higher than our thoughts (see Isaiah 55:9). Any other way is a detour that many times leads us away from where God is trying to take us.  Proverbs 14:12 says, "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." When will we learn that God's way is the highway to success, to victory, and to abundant life (see John 10:10)?

After I gave my son time to calm down, I had a conversation with him  The biggest issues was that he thought his father and I were being unfair.  So I asked him some questions to help him change his mind and attitude. These were the questions.

1. Do you believe Mom and Dad love you?
2. Do you believe that Mom and Dad want you to suffer?
3. Do you believe Mom and Dad know what they are talking about?
4. Do you believe Mom and Dad want good things for you?
5.  Do you believe that Mom and Dad would lead you the wrong way?

I let him know that if he could stop and ask some of these questions when his mind started telling him how unfair we were being then he would be able to change his attitude and therefore change his outcome for the good.  It is the same with us and God.  If we can ask ourselves some of these questions when we feel resistent to God's instructions or corrections, then we can change our attitudes and change our outcomes.  God said if you love me keep my commandments (see John 14:15).  It is also written that "Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him." (see 1 Corinthians2:9)
