What If?
I was thinking this morning about how blessed I am to have the family that I have, one that intrduced me to Jesus and has allowed me to see them grapple with the word of God and their faith, but what if they were wrong? What if I am wrong? What if Jesus isn't the way, the truth, or the life?
If Christianity isn't true then there are millions of people who are trying to live honorable lives. They are giving to the biggest charity in the world, the church. They are forgiving people who didn't say I'm sorry because they believe that they have been forgiven. If its not true then there are Christians out there who have made mistakes and are trying to make it right and/or grow beyond it. They are trying to live in a way that doesn't harm others. There are millions of people right now who are clinging on to hope in dire situations. There are millions of people singing and dancing in spite of what it looks like around them. There are millions of people caring for others. If Christianity is a lie or a mistake then I have built my legacy of love, forgiveness, community, and family on nothing. I don't mind this though because if I am wrong then I have still built a legacy of love, forgiveness, community, and family. If it's not true than I've lived a good life, and that for me is a win.
I could be mistaken in my faith, but what if I am not mistaken? What if the Bible is the truth and salvation and healing of the human relationship with God is through him? If Christianity is true then I get to enjoy life on earth with a loving God who hears my prayers and never leaves me alone. If it's true then millions of people who have had hard lives here on earth can enjoy eternal rest with God in Heaven where there is no more death, sickness, pain, or suffering. If it's true than I had an insurmountable debt of sin that has been paid on my behalf, and I am free. If I am right about my faith in Jesus than every promise to me in God's word will be fulfilled, and I am an heir in the kingdom of God. If it's true than hell: eternal separation from God, is real for those who choose to reject God's salvation through Jesus and offer of relationship. If I am right and Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, than the creator of Heaven and Earth loves me and you and he made a way for us to be together forever with him. "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." Romans 10:9.
What if you gave Jesus a try, a real try? This doesn't mean wearing the striped suit or the big hat. It doesn't mean not laughing at funny things or always having a stern look. What I mean is praying with expectation that God has heard you and will answer. I mean try reading the Bible and asking God what he meant. I mean try going to a church that fits your learning style and speaks your language. I mean asking God to help you to make good choices on the daily basis. What if you placed your trust in God and the finished work on the cross of Jesus? I challenge you to give Jesus a try.
