Look -A-Likes

I often have found myself looking at my parents and trying to see what about me resembles them; my eyes are like Mom, my lashes like Dad.  I would take such pride in finding them in me.  It made me feel like I was a part of them and they a part of me. Others around me also took joy in arguing who they think spit me out.  "You look just like your daddy!" some person would say while another next to them would readily disagree.   Other times I would get "Wow you look like your mom!"  to which others would roll their eyes in disagreement.  People can't quite seem to agree.  Maybe its because my parents have been together for so long that they have started to look alike. I suppose building a life together tends to do that to people.  You start to resemble who/what you have spent the most time connecting with.

Now I sit down and think about how I might resemble Christ.  Is my heart shaped like his?  Does my patience stretch like his?  Is my forgiveness as thick as his?  Scripture says that we are known by our fruit which is what we are reproducing into the world.  I want to produce fruit that shows that I am a child of God.  I want my fruit to look like I sprouted from him.  What is not so surprising is that the more time I spend with him the more I look like him.  The more time I spend watching what he does, the more accurate my attempts are at doing what he said I could do too.  The more time I spend talking with him, the more my words resemble his words.  This makes both of us smile because looking like him is what I was created for.

Every culture has an idea of what God looks like, but the Bible has already told us that we were made to resemble him from the very beginning.  It's time that we begin to not only look at the fruit that we are reproducing, but also look at how God's creation of us reveals who He is.  He made us with feelings and desires.  He made us with a sense of right and wrong, and he made us to cultivate and manage.  He made us with ears to hear music and eyes to see colors.  He gave us taste buds that detect different flavors and nervous systems that detect sensations.  He made us with voices to speak and sing, to yell and whisper.  I am going to continue to pray that God shows himself in me authentically and assuredly.  I want to be his look-a-like.

Genesis 1:26-27

26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
