Shout

Image
There are varying levels of acceptance in churches for shouting (yelling, screaming, dancing, running in response to a word from God or move of God).  I have found that it is a part of how I communicate with God.  Just like doing the wave at basketball games, stomping at football games, or yelling "charge" at baseball games.  Sometimes I just have to shout because it is the only adequate way that I can express who God is to me, what God has said ,or what he has done in that moment for my life.   I mentioned in another post that I once found myself shouting in my son's hospital room.  That was two months ago.  My youngest son was hospitalized for 6 weeks after waking up paralyzed suddenly by a condition called transverse Myelitis.  Nothing that he did or we did caused it.  It just happened, and my bouncing baby boy stopped walking, talking, and even crying because his muscles were too weak.  An MRI showed swelling on his spine....

LIft Your Hands Up

Image
Put your hands up.  The bible gives us many examples of lifted hands.  In my search for spiritual and social meaning in everyday life, I have found myself thinking about what it means to put my hands up.  People put their hands up at concerts or sporting events; when an officer is about to make an arrest they tell the suspect to put their hands up. There are even songs telling us to put our hands up. Church people put their hands up too.   I even saw my one year old putting his hands up last week while listening to some good preaching online.  Here is why and when I put my hands up.  Worship:  noun reverent honor and homage paid to God or a sacred personage, or to any object regarded as sacred. formal or ceremonious rendering of such honor and homage: They attended worship this morning.   (dictionary.com June 24,2020)   Worship requires a recognized, permanent, and direct imbalance of power. One is above and one is below by a defini...

Hope in the Journey

Image
Many people would say that "not yet" means "no". It sounds like it.  I can't tell you how many times I have heard or said "not yet".  I can tell you that MOST of the time it has been met with complaining, and even yelling or crying. Society's desire to have everything right away has given us a negative response to waiting.  You can see evidence of this in any place where there are groups of people; the DMV (department of motor vehicles) is a prime example.  If we think about it logically though, "not yet" really means that something is on its way or that we are on our way.   "Are we there yet?"  If you were ever in a car for an extended period of time with children, then you may know the sheer annoyance of this question.  If we are still driving we obviously haven't arrived yet. My relationship with God is a lot like a father and daughter traveling the world together. Sometimes God gives me the wheel, but if I am not careful...

Just Ask for It

I have missed out on so many things in my life simply because I didn't ask for help.  Free things and opportunities have passed me by again and again.  God is working on me with this because he never intended for God's people to live completely separate of other people.  We were made in the context of family, and family exists to help everyone thrive.  If we were made to help each other than why don't we ask for help?  I can tell you that for me, asking for help feels like admitting my own weaknesses. It also carries the risk of changing my relationships.  If I finally shut down my personal pride to ask for help and I get a negative response, it might hurt our relationship. Oddly, while both of these things are valid and true, they are also hindrances to growth in every area of my life.   In this season of my life I feel like God is working on my perspective of "the ask."  I used to think that people who were constantly ask for things were se...

Name Calling

Image
I don't do negative name calling in my home.  I Believe that to call someone something is either a blessing or a curse depending on how you identify them, and in many cases children become a version of what you call them. When I named my children I considered their names carefully so that each time that I would call them I would be declaring something good about them.  No one that I know of in their right mind likes being called out of their name (being called something that they don't prefer).  Neither does anyone that I know of in their right mind want to be called the bad things that they have done or experienced.  I believe that it is necessary call out events (recognize the truth of situations) and behaviors both positive and negative (recognize the choices that are being made) so that we can grow and/or celebrate, but it is never our job to call out people (make a conclusion concerning their worth). I would even venture to say  that this includes ourselves...

Fit for the Kingdom

Image
Luke 9 is a thick chapter of scripture full of healing, revelation, and miracles.  In these verses you'll find success and failure, faith and fear.  The thing that sticks in my heart the most is the challenge.  Luke 9:60-62 depicts some quick exchanges with men who were challenged to join Jesus on his journey.  The first man wanted to join Jesus but he wanted to resolve his father's death first, and the second was called by Jesus but wanted to go back home to say goodbye to his family first.  Jesus did not mince words when he said that they were not fit for the kingdom.  Jesus put it this way, " No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God" Luke 9:62.   This statement causes me to ask some questions "What does it mean to be fit for the kingdom?"  "What Kingdom?"  "Am I fit for the kingdom?" What does it mean to be fit for the kingdom?  Well, if I look at the example that Jesus gave i...

Fear and Love

Image
I have made so many decisions out of fear:  fear of being wrong, fear of failure, fear of success, fear of being hated, fear of being alone, fear of hurting others, fear of being hurt, and so many others.  I have made some bad decisions because of fear, and I have made some good decisions because of fear.  Scripture has a lot to say about fear.  In 2 Timothy 1:7 it says that God has not given us the spirit of fear but of power, love, and sound mind.  This places love, power, and wisdom in opposition of fear.  The power of God, the love of God, and the wisdom of God are the tools given us to eradicate our fears.  It is amazing how subjective our view is.  The closer we get to something the bigger it seems and the further away from something we get, the smaller it seems.  In this same fashion the closer we get to God the bigger we see him, and the further we get from our fears the smaller they seem.  As I experience more of God's love, t...
