What's Already Done?

I've heard so many pastors say "It's already done." People wave, shout, and high five like it's Christmas.  You'd be hard pressed to find someone who showed any form of confusion or curiosity about such a provocative statement.  Have you ever had one of those elementary moments where you know you should just nod along with everyone else that may or may not understand what was just said, but decide not to? The little girl in me started to ask recently about this statement in curiosity.  Young Faith running around inside of me stopped the other day to ask "what's done?  I'm still going through so much, and I know so little. I still have so many decisions to make.  How can I be done?"  She is so analytical and deductive.  The grown up conversation might be the discussion of choice vs. fate.

Do we decide how our lives will go or does God?  This is deep stuff.  We discussed this subject in a Theology class of mine in college.  My professor didn't tell us what to think, but she presented several ideas that were interesting.  The discussions got heated and many students left sure of one thing, they weren't sure what to think.  When feelings like that arise I know that I have missed something in my Bible study.  I pull out my highlighters, notebook, concordance, pens, and Bible.  My conclusion is that it says that God knows us beyond our understanding.  Since God knows us completely, he knows what we're going to decide. God knows our choices before we do and knows the results of our choices.

He knows us from start to finish. Because God knows his creation so completely, he knows how it all plays out.  It doesn't hurt either that God is outside of time and isn't limited by it. He sees the past, present, and future as the same, and the Lord orchestrates events in our lives to show us who he is while still allowing us to be who we are.  Our destiny is already written, and is driven by our choices.  We will all reach our destinations, but those of us who follow the Lord's instruction will find much more satisfaction in the journey because we have someone walking with us that promised he would never leave us.  Emmanuel, God with us. So what's already done... is everything.  We are all characters in the story that was already written by the hand of God. Thankfully the story was lovingly written by the author and finisher of my faith. This also would mean that no one and nothing can forfeit our destiny.  That is a reason to rejoice like it's Christmas every day.
