Ears to Hear
I think one of the big challenges for me is my hearing. I talk to God all the time, but it seems like when God gets ready to to speak to me there's wax stuck in my ears. I once spent an entire school year in high school asking my friends "what did you say?" every time they spoke. I am amazed that my friends were still around after a year of repeating themselves two, three, and four times. I seriously thought that my hearing was fading. As much as I tried and leaned in to hear, everything sounded like a distant echo. I now realize that I was so distracted within my mind that I couldn't focus on what anyone else was saying. My own voice was so loud in my thoughts that I couldn't hear people shouting right next to me. Have you ever felt like that in your spiritual life? I have. There have been so many moments where I thought I heard something from God but couldn't make out the words. Thank God for his patience and persistence. He always finds a way to get me the message.
Today was different though. I asked God a direct question and got a direct answer. Was it a voice...no, it was a feeling and a voice in my spirit. I was so shocked by the immediate response that I asked again, and again, and again. I asked half the day to be sure that the answer wouldn't change. Finally I got the information in my hand that God had already given me. I was a bit embarrassed, but glad at the same time. God really was answering me. It was him. I asked something that only God could know, and he told me before anyone else could. I am so grateful that God doesn't leave his people in the dark if they are pure of heart before him including me. I just have to get out of my own head and out of my own way to hear God, and I am sure at least one person in the world would say that this is true of themselves. God speaks to his people today in the year 2018. He spoke to me, and he is no respecter of persons (see Romans 2:12) so he will speak to you too. Anyone who is willing seeks God with their whole heart will find him (see Deuteronomy 4:9).
God gave each of us his Holy Spirit to be a direct line from us to him. It's a landline on the inside of each of us. It is more than a conscience because a conscience can only identify incoming information as okay or not okay. Holy Spirit reminds us of whatever God has taught us and reveals things to us that we have no other reference for except the Bible and time. God never lies or contradicts himself, so if Holy Spirit tells us something the Bible will agree. I include time here because time has a way of revealing the truth of matters. When God answered me this morning I waited, and time confirmed the story. It was just as Holy Spirit said.
If you are struggling to hear God and all you're getting is static, get quiet. Tune your ear to his word. God has not gone silent on you, you just need to have an ear to hear his voice. Try asking God a direct and honest question and then wait for the answer. Don't squirm and don't allow your inner voice to take over. How is God supposed to get a word in if you never stop talking? Wait and listen. God will answer you, and then it's time to confirm what God has said. Watch and see what God does when you actually take the time to listen to him. I am still amazed today at what God told me and what happened. I'll share later, but there are a few things I need to do first. Don't worry the testimony is coming.
